Something old, something new: creating a vintage home. Article by By Gabrielle Fagan – 25 June 2013

Old has never been more in vogue, and giving a home a vintage feel is bang on-trend.

If you're secretly yearning to give your home a charming new look, it's time to hark back to the past.

Remnants of vintage fabrics, old wallpapers, a little imagination and some basic craft skills are all that's needed to conjure the fashionable atmosphere of a bygone age, according to vintage expert Sarah Moore.

Her new book, Vintage Home, is packed with 50 handmade projects, from furniture to decorating, and all the essentials can be cheaply found in places like charity shops, car boot sales, flea markets, house clearances and reclamation yards.

"As you build your collection of thrifty and gorgeous vintage finds, you can customise them and decorate your entire home at a fraction of the cost of buying things new," she says.

"Slot a little bit of vintage into your home, or fill it with retro finds. You can get a huge amount of pleasure from finding just the right materials to add colour, character and individuality."

Here are Moore's tips for vintage style, and a couple of her projects to try.

MATERIAL MAKEOVER
Recycle vintage fabrics and use them to make curtains, duvet and cushion covers, or for jazzy details like a new ironing board cover or towel-edging, suggests Moore.

She advises choosing strong materials and washing them in a colour-kind detergent, then ironing them before use.

"Mix and match old fabrics with new. Striped ticking, dyed linen and calico sit really well alongside old fabrics," she says. "Use them for linings, which will allow your vintage finds to go twice as far.

Beautiful French vintage fabric

I have finally managed to get my last two consignments of antique and french fabrics washed, ironed and pre-listed onto the website. Today sees the start of these wonderful fabrics.

Many of the fabric designs of years gone by are being copied onto new cotton, however they don't have the same colour tones and of course no history at all. Our natural resources are running out, one of which is cotton, so it makes sense to recycle and re-use fabrics that we still have.

Here are the superb French vintage fabrics that are ready to use and available on the

Antique French toile fabric

What an exhausting day I've had. Yesterday my hubby slipped over whilst walking the dog and this morning his ankle and leg was badly swollen. I finally persuaded him to get an appointment at the doc's. He hates going but I was concerned. After going to see the nurse he was sent for an X-ray and told that he had broken his fibula. So off we go at 4.30pm back to the doctors who will take a look at the X-ray and probably send him to hospital to be plastered up.
My husband does all of the shopping cooking, walking the dog and trips to the post office, so gues who has to take all of that on now as well as run the business, look after mum and I still haven't dome the tax returns.
Still, I know that Steve would do the same for me and he never moans although he is obviously in a lot of pain, bless him.
I did manage to get some of my latest bundles of vintage fabric washed and ironed over the weekend and this afternoon managed to photograph them all. here is a sneak preview of them.
